Scandinavian design in the Scottish Borders: Meet the two Garys, founders and owners of Haus and Co.
Haus and Co is an independently owned lifestyle store and coffee counter tucked away amongst the hills of the beautiful town of Innerleithen. The focus of the store is quality, craftsmanship, and ethically sourced products. They even offer their very own roast of Haus Coffee. With all this in mind, we thought we’d better have a chat with them and find out more.
What’s great about Innerleithen, where you are based?
Innerleithen lies close to the north bank of the River Tweed, some 30 miles south of Edinburgh in the Tweed Valley in the Scottish Borders. Built around a thriving textiles industry, today Innerleithen is famed for being one of the UK’s foremost Mountain Biking Centres, playing host to many international world championship competitions and Mountain Bike festivals.
It looks like there’s plenty to do, not to mention the breathtaking views. What would you recommend to someone visiting your store?
Opportunities for cycling and walks in the surrounding hills and glens are excellent, with wonderful views from the tops. And on rainy days, of which we have a few, there’s the old spa-turned-museum, a National Trust-run Victorian printworks (the oldest working in existence in the UK), and even Scotland’s oldest inhabited house to explore. And we couldn’t omit to mention Caldwell’s – the fabulous ice cream shop right in the center.
You stock some really carefully curated items, so it’s great that you’ve chosen Uskees to be one of them. How does Uskees fit in with the store?
We love Uskees. Since opening, the Haus and Co team have all been wearing the super cool Uskees Japanese-style aprons as our team uniform. We also sell Uskees in-store, primarily the accessory ranges including tote bags, Donegal hats, and of course, the aprons. They have become a staple of our stock range, and our customers love the quality and ethos of the Uskees brand.
For people who may not have visited your store before, what would you say are your three essential items you offer?
Woolen throws handmade in Sweden by Klippan using 100% lambswool. Ceramics from Amsterdam design studio Archive Studio. And of course, the Uskees Japanese-style Aprons.
Thank you to the two Garys, and if you’re tempted by Scandinavian design paired with a perfectly brewed coffee, you can visit them at-
Haus and Co at 46 High Street, Innerleithen, EH44 6HF.
