Fieldnotes 012 | Arnold & Co.

Fieldnotes 012 | Arnold & Co.

We’re heading east, across the Pennines away from our home in Manchester to neighbouring county, Yorkshire.

Today we’re in the city of Sheffield, a city built on industry. For decades Sheffield was the centre of the world’s production of Steel and played a major role in the industrial revolution.

All of our pieces are inspired by the heritage of workwear, what people wore to work and what function their garments served. It only makes sense you’ll find a stockist of ours in the city centre.

Arnold & Co, located on Ecclesall Road, as well as Uskees, some fantastic international brands and is a must-visit for any menswear enthusiast.

Grace, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. We love the store, it’s great to be a part of your beautifully curated range of stock. What’s the story behind your store and where does the name Arnold & Co come from?

In 2018, we launched our family-run store,as a tribute to our late dad and grandad, Arnold. It was Richard's passion for quality clothing and craftsmanship that sparked the idea to create a retail destination in Sheffield, which, at the time, lacked independent options. Together, Richard, and I, Grace (his daughter), run the store and enjoy every moment of it. We offer a diverse range of global brands, alongside our own Forge Denim line, proudly crafted in England.

There’s some real quality pieces in here, how do you choose what you stock?

We aim to curate clothing that we can envision lasting for decades to come, encouraging customers to invest in pieces they'll cherish for years. Our goal is to shift people's purchasing habits away from disposable fashion and towards a focus on quality, prioritising ethically made and sourced products.

Uskees fits seamlessly into our store as a recent addition to our carefully curated selection. The commitment to quality and anti waste aligns perfectly with our values. It's also great to see we share appreciation for similar materials we choose to work with - Uskees and Forge Denim share the same love for Corozo which is a beautiful sustainable material derived from a nut!

The store feels right at home here in Sheffield, what do you love about the city?

Sheffield is our hometown and we truly love it here. Everyone here is so friendly and the city really has got something for everyone. We are located on Ecclesall Road where there are plenty of other independent stores, bakeries and bars. Plus, being so close to the Peak District means you're never far from some stunning outdoor scenery. There is the perfect mix of city vibes and natural beauty that makes it a great place to explore.

Where would you recommend visiting?

Naturally, we would point anyone right in the direction of our next door neighbour Say Paloma, owned by Maria, Richard’s partner. At Maria’s you will find a selection of incredible vintage pieces amongst her own designs beautifully crafted from recycled materials inspired by her annual trips to India. And for a place to eat, we would send you across to Napoli Centro for a Neapolitan style pizza and a welcoming atmosphere (You can find us here every Friday night!)

Using other products from your store, how would you style up an Uskees product?

I'd start with a #3001 buttoned overshirt. You cannot go wrong with this piece in any colourway.

Forge Denim FD002 14oz Japanese Selvedge Denim Jeans. These jeans pay homage to our home town, Sheffield’s steel-making history with their stainless steel buttons.

A pair of Danner Mountain Light Boots. These will get you around in any terrain.. especially the steps up to the pub!

Thank you to Grace and Arnold & Co. for featuring in the latest instalment of Fieldnotes. Next time you're in Sheffield, make sure you may them a visit and in the meantime, find them on Instagram @arnoldandco_store
